Burnham fireworks organisers will take no chances with weather
This
year's Burnham-On-Sea seafront fireworks display will be fully
insured just in case bad weather forces another cancellation like
last year, organisers said on Monday (August 18th).
Cash-strapped
Sedgemoor District Council withdrew its financial support for
the event in March due
to the authority's huge £1.8m funding shortfall, but generous
businesses and residents in Burnham rallied around, donating thousands
of pounds to save the event, as Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported
last month.
But
the event's organisers are taking no chances with the weather
and Town Clerk Eileen Shaw told Monday's town council meeting
that the display would be fully insured.
"We
have placed an order for the fireworks for this year's display
and have ensured the event is fully insured," she said.
"If
we have to cancel the event, the company running the display could
charge us up to 50 per cent of the overall costs, which would
stretch into thousands of pounds, so we've approached an insurance
company to cover the other half. It's a small price to pay for
financial security."
This
year's fireworks will be held on Sunday November 9th, the night
before this year's Burnham-On-Sea
Carnival on Monday November 10th.
